Masks Made Mandatory In Kerala Amid COVID Surge, Violation Punishable

Mumbai: Amid a rise in COVID-19 cases, the Kerala government on Wednesday made wearing masks mandatory. In its latest order, the government has said that any violation of the rule will be punishable.

Earlier, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said it was an urgent concern, but the government “will remain vigilant as other states are reporting an increase in the number of cases”.

Kerala had eased several COVID restrictions due to a significant drop in the number of COVID cases.

Several other states including Delhi, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh have brought back the mask rule.

In a related development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today interacted with Chief Ministers via video conferencing on the emerging COVID-19 situation in the country.

He urged the states to be vigilant especially in view of the upcoming festivals.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 2,927 new infections in a day, taking the case count to 4,30,65,496, while the active caseload rose to 16,279, according to data from the Union Health Ministry.
