‘Pati Patni…’ Makers Remove Marital Rape Dialogue After Criticism

Mumbai: The trailer of Kartik Aaryan and Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Pati, Patni Aur Woh received a lot of backlash for its sexist undertones. One particular dialogue has been heavily criticised for making light of marital rape.
In the sequence Kartik tells his friend that if a man requests for sex from his wife he is labelled a bhikari (beggar), if he does not have sex with her, he is an atyachari (cruel man) and if somehow he manages to convince her through “jugaad”, he is branded a balatkari (rapist).

Now, the producer of the film Juno Chopra told Mumbai Mirror that the portion has been edited out. Pati, Patni Aur Woh is a remake of Juno’s grandfather BR Chopra’s film and the producer said that he respects people’s sentiments.

“Both my grandfather and my father Ravi Chopra have made socially relevant films. I believe in doing the right thing and respecting people’s sentiments we have done away with the lines,” Juno Chopra told the publication.“He said that the story of Pati, Patni Aur Woh is still relevant. Karan Johar, too, has always been fond of the title. Though I would have loved to work with Akshay Kumar in this case he only shared the idea with us,” Juno says. Juno Chopra also said that the idea of remaking this film came from Akshay Kumar

While social media had called out the film, Bhumi Pednekar had however said that the dialogue was taken out of context. “Pati, Patni Aur Woh is not a film that is taking a dig at marital rape. As actors, we need to be sensitive about things, but I think that the dialogue has gone out of context. If Pati, Patni Aur Woh has hurt sentiments, we are truly sorry, but everyone who is involved with the film does not belong to that school of thought. The makers are very sensitive people. This film is truly empowering to women,” she said. The actor had also apologised if the dialogue had hurt people.

Pati Patni Aur Woh is a remake of BR Chopra’s 1978 film of the same name. It has been directed by Mudassar Aziz and produced by Juno Chopra and Abhay Chopra. It also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Panday. Pati, Patni Aur Woh releases on 6 December.
