Single, Low Tax Rate Will Reduce Burden On Poor People: Rahul Gandhi

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised the government over GST rates and asserted that a low tax rate will help reduce the burden on the poor and the middle class.

Highlighting that the rate of GST on diamonds is 1.5 per cent, while that on health insurance is 18 per cent and hospital rooms at five per cent, he dubbed the GST as “Gabbar Singh Tax” and said it shows who the prime minister cares for.

“GST on Health Insurance: 18 per cent. GST on Hospital Room: 5 per cent. GST on Diamonds: 1.5 per cent. ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ is a painful reminder of who the PM cares for,” he said on Twitter.

“A single, low GST rate will reduce compliance costs, prevent the government from playing favourites and ease the burden on poor and middle-class families,” he also said.

The Congress demanded scrapping of the existing GST law, saying it has hurt the economy and a new law should be brought in its place as it has many “birth defects” which cannot be corrected.
