UIDAI : Aadhaar Not Compulsory For Admission in Schools

Mumbai : Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has recently ordered school not to insist the 12-digit biometric identifier a pre-condition for students admission. In particular, the alertness of UIDAI has come at a time when admission to nursery and entry level classes in the national capital has started in more than 1,500 private schools.

It was told that some schools are pushing as one of the necessary documents to enter the base. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has said that it is aware of the reports that some school students are seeking the Aadhaar card for admission.

Speaking to PTI, UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey said,”This is not right. This is not as per the provisions of law…School admission and other facility to children cannot be made conditional to production of Aadhaar.”

Apart from this, UIDAI has asked the school authorities and their management to ensure that no child is denied access to admission.

“In fact, schools should admit children without Aadhaar and ensure that children are given Aadhaar once they are in schools by arranging special camps for them,” Pandey added.

When he was asked about what action could schools face if they continued to insist on Aadhaar, Pandey said that it will clearly be seen as contempt of court.

Meantime, verdict from SC ordered that it would not be mandatory for school admissions as well as examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Examination, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for medical entrance and the University Grants Commission.
