US Court Verdict, Katy Perry Copied Christian Rap Song
Mumbai: Katy Perry copied her 2013 song ‘Dark Horse’ from a Christian rap song, a US Court has ruled. In the week-long trial, she gave evidence of never hearing the song ‘Joyful Noise’ by the Flame.
The decision, issued Monday afternoon, quickly moves the proceedings towards the damages phase, where Perry could face millions in penalties and the forfeiture of future earnings from the song.
The sound system of the court was broken and thus her song could not be played for the jurors. She offered to play the song live for them.
During the trial, Katy’s team described both the songs as “commonplace”, arguing that because of that the Flame aka Marcus Tyrone Gray could not claim copyright.
Throughout, Perry and her attorneys argued that ‘Dark Horse’ was entirely original, with only vague similarities between the songs.
The lawyers representing Flame claimed that she had copied “an important part of the song”. The jury ruled against Katy.
