VHP Passes Resolution For Implementation Of Uniform Civil Code

Mumbai: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Sunday passed a resolution calling for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in the country.

While the VHP has not warned of any protest for the purpose, it has suggested the Center build a consensus on implementing the UCC keeping in mind all sections of the society.

Juna Peethadheeshwar Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avadheshanand Giri Maharaj said in a high-level meeting convened by the Central Guidance Board of VHP held in Haridwar that it is necessary to implement one law of for every section to solve various problems in the country.

Notably, some Muslim bodies, including the Jamaat Ulama-e-Hind and the All India Personal Law Board, had objected to the implementation of the UCC.

Significantly, there are many cases pending in the Supreme Court regarding Uniform Civil Code. Through many petitions, there has been a demand to implement UCC in the country. The demand for implementation of the law is being raised citing Article 44 of the Constitution.

The Central Government has said in response to a petition that the matter is under consideration of the Law Commission and it will be implemented only after receiving its report. The Center has not yet shown any concrete steps in this matter. However, states like Uttarakhand have already constituted a team to prepare a draft for it.

In the high-level meeting of VHP, there was a discussion on forced conversion across the country.

In the meeting, a saint said, “Forcible conversions are being done strategically in some tribal areas, it is difficult to stop such conversions without taking drastic steps.”
