BJP Leaders Using CAA As Carrot On Stick: TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee

Mumbai: TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee said BJP leaders are using the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as a “carrot” on a stick.

The TMC leader said Shah kept his silence on the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) during his two-day visit to Assam, however, he announced plans to implement the CAA in West Bengal.

“This is proof of what kind of politics the BJP-led government is doing. They are using the issue as a jumla,” he said.

The TMC leader said that the Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha in 2019 and within a month it came into force and became CAA.

Further attacking the central government he said that it takes 3-4 months to make rules for the new act but it has been more than two and a half years and the centre has sought six extensions but is still unable to make rules for CAA.

The Trinamool Congress will continue to oppose the CAA, he said and called it a “draconian bill”.

Stating that the government prepared the NRC list in Assam by spending Rs 1,600 crore and leaving out around 19 lakh people, Banerjee called it a “nonsense list”.

Reacting to the Union Home Minister’s remark that the West Bengal government was not cooperating with the Center to tackle the issue of infiltration, Banerjee said the Home Ministry should protect its borders.

Banerjee said that it is the responsibility of the Border Security Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Some people say that Hindus are in danger and some others say Muslims are in danger but if they take off their spectacles of communalism, they will see that it is India that is in danger, he added.
