S Vijayadharani Resigns As Congress MLA In Tamil Nadu, Joins BJP

Mumbai: Three-term Congress MLA S Vijayadharani left the party on Saturday and resigned as Tamil Nadu MLA. She joined the BJP in the presence of Minister of State L Murugan, who has the responsibility of overseeing preparations for Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

Vijayadharani, who’s a lawyer and ex-president of state Mahila Congress, claimed women aren’t given leadership roles in Congress.

Tamil Nadu Congress MLA Vijayadharani reportedly joins the BJP in Delhi, according to ANI. In the presence of Union Minister of State L Murugan, she became a member of the saffron party.

After entering the party, she spoke to the media and stated, “PM Modi’s leadership is important for the nation.”

Ahead of joining the BJP, Vijayadharani tendered her resignation. In the letter to the Congress chief, she said, “I hereby tender my resignation from the Party’s primary membership and related posts held by me in the Party for personal reasons. Kindly accept the same.”

In response to prior rumors that she could join the BJP, the MLA informed The Hindu that her reason for being in Delhi was to pursue a lawsuit in the Supreme Court.

Vijayadharani was the Tamil Nadu Mahila Congress’s previous president. She was named the All India Mahila Congress’s General Secretary in 2016, with responsibility for Karnataka. With a huge margin, she was re-elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly a second time in 2016. As a result, the ruling AIADMK, led by Selvi Jayalalitha, lost only one of its 234 seats.

For ten years, Vijayadharani was also a member of the privilege committee and the chief whip of the Congress in the assembly. She also retained her position as the party’s chief whip in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly after being re-elected from the same Kanyakumari district for a third time in 2021.
