Ahmedabad Bans Street Stalls With Non-Veg Food, Sellers Fear Losing Livelihood

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel had said that it wasn’t about veg or non-veg food but the food stalls should not obstruct traffic flow

Mumbai: After the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday banned street vendors selling non-vegetarian food in public places, the sellers fear losing their livelihood.

AMC’s TP committee chairman Devang Dani told The Indian Express, “Orders have been issued to the Estate Department to conduct checking from Tuesday morning and remove the egg and non-vegetarian street carts from the main roads. From tomorrow morning, these will be removed. Also, these are banned from within a 100-metre range of religious places, gardens, public places, schools and colleges.”

A street vendor Rakesh questioned the decision and asked that why is selling non-veg allowed for hotels.

“How does it make sense to ban us & allow hotels. Won’t the smell (of non-veg food) come from there?” Rakesh told ANI.

Initially, the civic bodies of Vadodara and Rajkot issued an order stating that non-vegetarian food sold on the street hurts the sentiments of the Hindu community. They added that the smoke emanating from these stalls is a health hazard.

Another vendor Sundar told ANI that his cart was taken despite being a sandwich seller.

“I’ve learnt about the ban on eggs carts, but I’m a sandwich seller & my cart was also taken,” says Sundar.

Yesterday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had said that it is not about veg or non-veg food but the food stalls should not block traffic.

“It wasn’t about veg or non-veg food. People are free to eat whatever they want. But food stalls should not obstruct traffic flow,” said Bhupendra Patel.
