Akhilesh Yadav To be Leader Of Opposition In Uttar Pradesh Assembly

Mumbai: Akhilesh Yadav is going to be the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Earlier this week, Yadav had resigned as Lok Sabha MP after winning his first Assembly election from Karhal.

The former Chief Minister of UP had quit the post of Lok Sabha MP from Azamgarh on Monday. He won his first state assembly election earlier this month from the family stronghold of Mainpuri, Karhal.

SP state president Naresh Uttam Patel told reporters on Saturday, “The newly elected MLAs of the Samajwadi Party have unanimously elected the party’s national president Akhilesh Yadav as the leader of the legislature party.”

After months of hectic campaigning and seven rounds of voting, Uttar Pradesh delivered its verdict on 10 March. The BJP retained the state for a second term with 273 seats, while the Samajwadi Party won 111 of the 403 seats in the state assembly.

Akhilesh Yadav, however, had said that this time’s results were proof that the BJP, which respects its image as a strong political party, maybe reduced to seats. The ruling party – and allies – won 325 seats in the 2017 state elections.
