All Schools In Delhi To Be Closed From Tomorrow Till Further Orders Amid Air Pollution

Mumbai: All schools in Delhi will be closed from tomorrow till further orders amid air pollution, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Thursday.

Gopal Rai said, “We had reopened the schools keeping in mind the forecast of improvement in air quality. However, the level of air pollution has increased again and we have decided to close the schools from Friday till further orders.”

Warning of strict action, the Supreme Court gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the Centre, Delhi and neighbouring states to act against industrial and vehicular pollution – counted as the main reasons behind the deteriorating air quality.

Slamming the Arvind Kejriwal government for reopening schools, the top court said “three-year-olds and four-year-olds are going to school but adults are working from home”. Chief Justice NV Ramana said, “We will appoint someone to run your government.”

Physical classes were resumed in schools, colleges and other educational institutions from Monday after being closed since November 13.

Delhi’s air quality deteriorated sharply last month after Diwali. A farm fire was also cited as a source – but this led to debate and blame game. Even after a month has passed, the city is still gasping for air.

A ban on all construction activities in the national capital is in place till further orders.
