Amarnath Yatra Cancelled For 2nd Consecutive Year Due To COVID-19, Will Be Symbolic

The annual pilgrimage was canceled last year too in the wake of the raging coronavirus pandemic in the country

Mumbai: J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has said the annual Amarnath Yatra has been canceled and will be symbolic only.

The decision to cancel the annual pilgrimage was taken at a meeting of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha here.

Sinha, after detailed deliberations, decided that the annual pilgrimage would be symbolic only. However, all the traditional religious rituals will be performed in the holy cave temple as per the previous practice.

“Shri Amarnathji Yatra canceled in wake of Covid-19 Pandemic. Decision after threadbare discussion with Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board members. Yatra to be symbolic only. However, all the traditional religious rituals shall be performed at the Holy Cave Shrine as per past practice,” he said in a tweet.

Sinha stressed that it is “not advisable to hold and conduct” this year’s pilgrimage in the larger public interest, adding that “it’s important to save people’s lives”.

The 56-day journey to the 3,880-metre-high cave temple of Lord Shiva, located in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, is scheduled to begin on June 28 through the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal and end on August 22.

Recently, the registration for the journey which started on April 1 was temporarily suspended from April 22 due to the COVID-19 situation.

The annual pilgrimage was canceled last year too in the wake of the raging coronavirus pandemic in the country.
