Army Chief Gen MM Naravane Takes Over As Chairman Of Chiefs Of Staff Committee

Mumbai: Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane took over as the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee on Wednesday as a stop-gap arrangement to fill the post that was vacated by the tragic demise of Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat.

The wife of India’s first Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat along with 11 armed forces personnel died in an Indian Air Force Mi-17 V5 helicopter crash in Coonoor district of Tamil Nadu on 8 December.

General Naravane has been given the charge as the chairman of the committee as he is the senior-most among the three service chiefs, people familiar with the development told news agency PTI.

IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary and Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar assumed their respective positions on 30 September and 30 November.

The Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) held a meeting on Tuesday and condoled the death of General Rawat and others killed in the Coonoor chopper crash. The survivor of the accident, Group Captain Varun Singh, died on Wednesday at a military hospital in Bengaluru.

The chopper crashed when General Rawat was on his way to Defence Services Staff College in Wellington to deliver a lecture.
