As It Deals With Only Central Govt, Moderna Refuses to Send Vaccines to Punjab

Mumbai: Moderna, the US-based manufacturer of coronavirus vaccine, today refused to entertain Punjab Government’s offer to supply vaccine to the state citing policy decision.

Punjab government had earlier reached out to global vaccine manufacturers including Sputnik, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson to procure vaccines.

Moderna said that as per its company policy, it will only deal with the Government of India. As per a statement issued by the Punjab government, Moderna said that it will deal with only the central government and not state governments or private individuals for vaccine procurement.

However, Moderna is one of the top leading pharma companies, whose vaccines are administered in North America and Europe.

Earlier, CM Singh had directed officials to explore possibilities of floating a global tender for the procurement of vaccines from all possible sources to ensure that people of the state are vaccinated against COVID-19 at the earliest.

Though, the state government now is yet to hear back from other vaccine manufacturers.

Meanwhile, Punjab reported 5,421 fresh Covid-19 cases on Saturday taking the tally to 533,973. The state also registered 201 Covid-19 fatalities pushing the death toll to 13,089. Punjab currently has 61,203 active cases of Covid-19.
