Mumbai: An avalanche warning has been issued by the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) in Manali, for 24 high-altitude areas in five districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur and Shimla.

Avalanche may also hit Jalori Pass, Nehrukund, Palchan-Kothi, Rohtang Pass, Sissu, Tandi, Keylong, Darcha, and other high-altitude areas.

Other avalanche prone areas are the Manimahesh trek route at Kilar, Barwas, Gahar, Kalawan, Ranikot and Bharmour in the remote Pangi valley of Chamba.

The hill state received snowfall on Thursday and Friday, disrupting normal life.

Though the skies have cleared, the state is still struggling to return to normalcy as hundreds of roads are still blocked for traffic.

State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) director Sudesh Kumar Mokhta said 423 roads, including three national highways, are still closed for traffic across the state. More than 145 roads in Shimla, 115 in Lahaul-Spiti and 45 in Chamba are closed for traffic. Over 276 power transformers are yet to be repaired and the water supply is to be restored in 92 schemes.

Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Manav Verma said the road conditions on the Manali-Leh highway are not suitable for vehicular movement, so only four-wheel drive with chains is allowed in emergencies.

Meanwhile, due to clear skies, a further drop in temperature has been recorded. Keylong, the administrative headquarters of tribal Lahaul-Spiti, remained closed, recording a night temperature of minus 13.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature was minus 3.8 in Kalpa, minus 1.8 in Manali and minus 1.2 in Kufri. Dalhousie recorded a minimum temperature of 0.8 degrees Celsius and state capital Shimla at 1.2 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for moderate to dense fog. Traffic movement in plains may be affected. Snowfall and rain may continue on higher hills till February 8.

SRINAGAR: A weak Western Disturbance led to light rain overnight in parts of Kashmir on Sunday, while another weather system is likely to hit the region on Tuesday night.

The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh centres of the IMD said that on Saturday evening, light rain occurred in Kupwara and Gulmarg in addition to Leh in the region due to a western disturbance.

IMD meteorologist Mohammad Hussain Mir said, “We saw rain at some weather stations during the night and then at some more stations including Srinagar during the day.”

He said that the existing weather system will dissipate by Monday afternoon and move to another region by Tuesday night.

The meteorologist said that the weather will remain dry till February 10-12. “Then, we may experience some light rain from February 13 onwards,” he added.

Ladakh will remain cloudy on Monday with light to moderate snowfall at many places.

The night temperatures in the Valley have improved over the past few days.
