BJP Hits Out Opposition-led States For Not Reducing The VAT On Petrol And Diesel

The BJP slams several states, including West Bengal and Maharashtra, for not reducing VAT on petrol and diesel

Mumbai: The BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya on Monday criticised the chief ministers of states where opposition parties are in power, for not slashing Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel.

“Mamata Banerjee, Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackrey, Ashok Gehlot, Baghel, Jagan Reddy, KCR, MK Stalin, Pinarayi Vijayan are some of the prominent opposition CMs who haven’t slashed VAT on petrol and diesel. People in their States continue to bear the brunt of high prices. Unacceptable,” he tweeted.

After the fuel recorded highest retail prices, the Centre government had last week cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 10 a litre, bringing relief to consumers.

According to the Centre, 22 states and UTs have lowered VAT on petrol and diesel after the Centre slashed excise duty. As many as 14 states, including major opposition-ruled ones like Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are among those that are yet to lower their levies.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday said that the ruling TRS government has not increased VAT on petroleum products and the question of reduction does not arise.

“We have not hiked VAT. We have not increased even a paisa so the question of reduction does not arise. Ever since the TRS government was formed, VAT has not been increased. Which fool will ask us to decrease (VAT)? The fool who increased it will have to reduce it,” he said.
