BJP MLA Ashish Shelar Appointed As Member Of The Misson Olympic Cell For The Target Olympic Podium Mission (TOPS)

Mumbai: Former Mumbai Cricket Association president and BJP leader MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar has been invited by the country’s sports authority to become a member of the Mission Olympic Cell for the “Target Olympic Podium Mission (TOPS)”

The “Mission Olympic Cell” is a 16-member committee working on the country’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar has been invited to be a part of it.

MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar has earlier been the President of the Mumbai Cricket Association. He has also served as the President of the Football Association and the president of the Jump Rope Federation of India. MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar’s love for sports has kept him equally active in this field as he is in politics. In the government of the then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, he was also given the responsibility as the Sports Minister. He has also built two grounds at Bandra for football, cricket, hockey, archery, basketball and skating and was instrumental in starting the Mumbai Premium League through the Mumbai Cricket Association.

The Target Olympic Podium Scheme has been launched by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India.

Under the aegis of the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), the committee works toward building the Olympic podium’s capacity in the Olympic Games, implementing and monitoring plans to achieve excellence and for creating better facilities for athletes.

The cell will select athletes for TOPS Core and Development Group for Paris 2024 and LA 2028. It will be instrumental in developing robust criteria for the identification of young talent to be a part of the Development Group for L 2028. It will also develop short, medium and long-term targets for athletes and will also monitor their preparedness and actual performance. It will approve budgetary requirements and will identify and enable the availing of high-performance expert coaches, recovery experts, and mental trainers to meet the training and preparation needs of identified athletes.

The committee is chaired by the Director-General, Sports Authority of India and its members include the President of the Indian Olympic Association, President of the Athletics Federation of India, President of the Wrestling Federation of India, President of the Archery Association of India, President of the Boxing Federation of India and world-renowned athletes like Baichung Bhutia (Football), Anju Bobby George (Athletics), Anjali Bhagwat (Shooting), Trupti Murgunde (Badminton), Sardara Singh (Hockey), Viren Rusquinha (Hockey and Olympic Gold Quest), Malav Shroff (Yachting & Sports Science Specialist), Monalisa Mehta (Table Tennis), Deepthi Bopaiah (CEO GoSports Foundation), Yogeshwar Dutt (Wrestling) and Gagan Narang (Shooting).

Among these MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar is the only one who is not from the sports field but the sports authority has invited him to be a member of this committee.
