BJP MLA Joins TMC, Third To Return After Bengal Polls

West Bengal: BJP MLA Vishwajit Das on Tuesday joined the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and said he feels uncomfortable in the saffron party.

Das, an MLA from Baghda, is the third legislator from the saffron party to return to the ruling party in West Bengal after Mamata Banerjee’s thumping victory in the April-May assembly elections.

After joining the party in Kolkata in the presence of Trinamool Congress general secretary Partha Chatterjee, he said, “I never felt comfortable in the BJP. I wanted to return to the Trinamool Congress long back. The BJP did nothing for Bengal.”

“Due to some misunderstandings, some changes were made which should not have been done. I have now returned to my home and will continue to work for the people of my state and assembly constituency,” he added.

Das, a two-time TMC MLA, had joined the BJP in 2019 and successfully contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections from Baghda on a BJP ticket.

On Monday, another BJP MLA, Tanmay Ghosh, who switched from the TMC to the saffron party in March ahead of the state elections, returned to the ruling party in Bengal.

Earlier in June, BJP MLA and party’s national vice-president Mukul Roy had rejoined the TMC, four years after he left the Mamata Banerjee-led party to join the saffron camp.

The BJP won 77 of the 292 Assembly seats in West Bengal polls, while the Trinamool Congress won 213 seats.

Earlier, BJP MLAs Nisith Pramanik and Jagannath Sarkar resigned to retain their Lok Sabha seats.
