Centre Working On National Database On Internal Security: Amit Shah

Mumbai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the Centre is working on a national database related to internal security covering terror funding, bomb blasts, narcotics, fake currency, hawala and terrorism. He said the database will help the central agencies and police in states and union territories in investigations.

At an event organized on the occasion of the 13th Raising Day of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Shah said the database on terrorism will help in the investigation and bring justice to the terrorist accused.

He said that NIA, Central Anti-Terrorism Investigation Agency, National Intelligence Grid and Intelligence Bureau are working on it.

“Any data, if it is kept in silos, is of no use, but if it is shared with each other and analyzed properly, it will be of great help.” Shah lauded the NIA for its investigation and conviction rate in terrorism-related cases in the last 13 years.

The NIA, which was formed in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2009, has a conviction rate of 93%. It has investigated over 400 cases since 2009 and filed charge sheets in at least 349 of them.

Shah praised the NIA for probing terror financing cases in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that this has helped in eliminating terrorism and the overground worker network in the Valley.

“In such a short span [13 years], NIA has established itself as an international agency and worked hard to investigate cases related to terrorism, terrorism financing and Maoism.”

Shah said the government was doing everything to make India terror-free and assured all possible assistance to the NIA in fighting terrorism. He asked the NIA to guide and assist anti-terrorist investigation agencies and units in the states and union territories.
