CM Alerts Agencies As IMD Warns Of 4-Day Heavy Rains In Maharashtra

Mumbai: Government agencies in Maharashtra have been put on high alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rains for four days in all districts of Konkan including Mumbai.

“A cyclonic circulation from North Maharashtra Coast to North Kerala Coast under the influence of an Offshore Trough at Middle Sea Level and over Konkan and Goa in lower troposphere levels; scattered to widespread rainfall accompanied with a thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds very likely over parts of south peninsular India and West coast with isolated heavy rainfall on June 6 and reduction in intensity thereafter,” the IMD added in its alert over the weekend.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that CM Thackeray has directed the evacuation of residents from dangerous buildings and shifting of people from flood-affected areas while ensuring that the services to COVID-19 patients continue uninterrupted.

“Meteorological Department has warned of four days of heavy rains in all districts of the Konkan region including Mumbai. The CM has instructed all agencies to be ready and vigilant. He said that NDRF and SDRF units should be deployed where necessary,” Maharashtra CMO said on Monday.

The CMO further directed that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF units be deployed at the time of heavy rains. Against the backdrop of calamity at the ONGC facility during Cyclone Touke, the CMO also said that ‘Central agencies including ONGC should remain vigilant about heavy rains during this period.”
