Congress, JD(S) Leaders Will Join BJP Ahead Of 2023 Polls: K’taka CM

Mumbai: Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday said that several leaders from Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) are in touch with the BJP and will be joining the party in the days to come ahead of the 2023 polls.

The chief minister was speaking at the party’s state headquarters here after former JD(S) MLA from Devanahalli Pila, Munishampappa and his supporters and some Congress leaders joined the BJP.

A BJP release quoted Bommai as saying that the participation of Congress and JD(S) leaders and workers from Bengaluru Rural and Ramanagara districts would strengthen the party in the region. He said leaders of other parties have joined the BJP, such events of leaders from other parties joining BJP would continue in the months to come.

He also expressed confidence that BJP will increase its strength in the North and South Karnataka regions and will come back to power in 2023.

Meanwhile, asserting that the Congress will not come to power in Karnataka for 10 more years, state BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel said, after this, the state will become “Congress-free”.

Criticizing the Congress party and its ongoing ‘padayatra’ (foot march) demanding implementation of the Mekedatu project, he said that for the chief minister’s post (during the 2023 elections), there was a tussle between its state President D K Shivakumar and Leader of Opposition in the assembly Siddaramaiah.

Bommai on Tuesday said his government was committed to implementing the Mekedatu project on the Cauvery river.

Accusing Congress of not doing anything for the implementation of the project while in power, he said, now it has no moral right to protest.

“The Congress which was unable to implement the project during its tenure is now protesting, they could not even prepare a DPR for the Mekedatu project, now they demanding immediate implementation of the project. We (BJP) have made progress during our tenure and are committed to implementing the Mekedatu project and we will do it,” Bommai said.

Talking to reporters here, he said that Congress has no moral right to oppose or criticize the current government on the issue, as they did nothing for the project during their tenure.

Hitting out at Congress leaders for targeting the government and police for registering FIRs against them, the chief minister said, “Law enforcing agencies have done their job, they (Congress leaders) are overreacting. You (Congress) had booked several cases against the opposition while in power, how many lathi- charges took place, there was a large-scale effort to suppress the opposition.”
