Congress Should Not Indulge In Hindutva Debate Which Is Miles Away From Its Core Ideology: Manish Tewari

Hinduism VS Hindutva debate started after Congress leader Salman Khurshid compared Hindutva with ISIS in his book

Mumbai: Congress MP Manish Tewari on Wednesday opined that the grand old party should stay away from the Hindutva debate which is miles away from the core ideology.

While speaking to IANS, Tewari said, “Congress philosophically should not indulge in this (Hindutva) debate which is miles away from its core ideology.”

“Those people who believe in ‘Liberalism and Secularism’ should be in the party, otherwise if you want religion to be part of politics then you should be in the right-wing parties, not Congress, which beliefs in secularism,” Tewari added.

Tewari also tweeted on the ongoing Hinduism VS Hindutva debate, which started after Congress leader Salman Khurshid compared Hindutva with radical Islamist groups like ISIS and Boko Haram in his book, “Sunrise Over Ayodhya: Nationhood in Our Times”.

“In Hinduism VS Hindutva debate some people in Congress miss a fundamental point. If I were to believe that my religious identity should be the basis of my politics then I should be in A Majoritarian or Minoritarian Political Party. I am in Congress because I believe in Nehruvian Ideal that Religion is a private space activity. Everyone has the right to practice, profess and propagate their religion in their private lives. In the Public domain, there should be a strict separation of the Church & State. I am a Hindu, I worship my God but that is not my politics,” the Congress leader tweeted.

In another tweet, he said, “In the global struggle between Right-Wing Populism and Liberalism Progressive parties cannot ever win hearts and minds of people if they offer ‘ersatz’ ideologies predicated on religion & caste bereft of core convictions and pluralistic beliefs.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also commented by drawing a difference between Hinduism and Hindutva.

“Is there something common between Hindutva and Hinduism, what is the difference between Hinduism and Hindutva? If they are the same way they have different names — why then use the name of Hinduism, and not Hindutva,” Gandhi had said.
