Delhi Police Gets Detaining Power Under National Security Act Till October 18

Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has granted the power to Police Commissioner Balaji Srivastava to apprehend anyone under the National Security Act (NSA) till October 18, 2021. A notification in this regard is effective from July 19.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of section 3 read with clause (e) of section 2 of the National Security Act, 1980, the Lieutenant Governor is pleased to direct that during the period, the Commissioner of Delhi Police may also exercise the powers to detain the Authority under sub-section (2) of section 3 of the said Act,” the notification said.

The NSA allows a person to be placed in preventive custody for months if authorities feel that person is a threat to national security and law and order.

The Lt Governor’s order comes ahead of Independence Day and comes at a time when farmers protesting against three agriculture laws of the Center are organizing ‘Kisan Sansad’ at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi.

The Delhi Police, meanwhile, said that it is a routine order and is issued regularly.

Earlier this month, Delhi Police Commissioner Balaji Srivastava had issued an order, prohibiting the flying of aerial objects like drones, paragliders, and hot air balloons, ahead of Independence Day celebrations.

The order shall remain in force in the national capital for a period of 32 days from July 16 till August 16 for security reasons, officials had said.
