Farmer Leader Charuni Launches Political Party; To Contest All Seats In Punjab Polls

Mumbai: Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Gurnam Singh Charuni launched his political outfit called Sanyukt Sangharsh Party on Saturday.

During a press conference, Charuni said that the party plans to contest in all 117 seats in the upcoming Punjab elections.

Chaduni’s decision to form a political party comes a few months before the assembly elections in Punjab.

Back on 26 November, the BKU leader offered to put a ‘Punjab model’ before the country so that the rest of the state could follow as an example.

While speaking to the media then, Chaduni said, “I am not contesting Punjab polls but gathering people to contest and present a model (of governance). We will form our own party for polls… If our govt comes in Punjab, the entire country in 2024 (national) polls will look up to the Punjab model.”

“We are running ‘Mission Punjab’- those who have votes should rule, and not the ones who have money. If the former rules, laws will be made in voters’ favour but if it is the latter, then laws will be made in favour of the wealthy,” he added.

It should be noted that Chaduni led the farmers’ movement against the Center and was instrumental in mobilizing the farmers from Punjab and Haryana to the borders of Delhi.

Meanwhile, Haryana’s opposition legislators on Friday demanded compensation and government jobs for the kin of farmers killed during an agitation against the Centre’s agricultural laws in the state assembly.

The laws were recently repealed, after which farmers suspended their year-long protest at Delhi borders.

The opposition legislators raised the matter during the Zero Hour on the opening day of the Haryana Assembly’s winter session here.
