Former Union Minister Chinmayanand, Accused Of Rape, Arrested

Mumbai: Former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand, accused of rape by a law student, was arrested.

“The BJP leader was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) from his residence Was Divya Dham,” amid heavy security deployment, his lawyer Pooja Singh told PTI.

He was taken to a government hospital for medical examination. He was then taken to the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate where he would be produced.

Singh said that the SIT took the signature of the relatives of Chinmayananda on the arrest memorandum, but the documents related to the arrest were not given to them.

Chinmayananda was taken for medical examination, the patients at the government hospital faced tough times as they were not allowed to enter the premises.

Teams led by senior police officers have been deployed in the court premises and hospital. A senior official said that a team of police officers is also patrolling the area to ensure that there are no disturbances.

A postgraduate student at one of the colleges run by Chinmayananda’s organization, the woman alleged that she was raped and “physically abused” for a year by the former Union Minister.

The case is being investigated by the SIT constituted by the Uttar Pradesh Police on the directions of the Supreme Court.

Chinmayananda, who was admitted to the Medical College here on Wednesday, was sent to King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow.

But according to his lawyer Om Singh, he decided to return to his residence on Thursday and get Ayurvedic treatment there.

Police have registered a case of criminal intimidation and kidnapping against Chinmayananda on the complaint of the woman’s father. Later, the student also accused him of rape and “physical abuse”.

The SIT has also examined the principals of the two colleges where the woman has studied in recent years.
