Hike In Sugarcane Prices By UP Govt A Joke: Rakesh Tikait

Rakesh Tikait said that the farmers union are ready for talks with govt, but no talks are happening

Mumbai: Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait has termed the increase in the purchase price of sugarcane announced by the Uttar Pradesh government as a “big joke” with the farmers.

“The hike of Rs 25 per quintal is not acceptable to farmers. It is a big joke by the Uttar Pradesh government on the farmers,” Tikait said.

Rakesh Tikait also accused that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath failed to keep up his promises. He asked Yogi to take accountability for the losses faced by the farmers.

“He (Yogi Adityanath) had promised in the manifesto to raise the value of sugarcane to Rs 375-Rs 450, yet he increased only Rs 25. He should give an account of the losses faced. The govt has failed completely. Crops are not being sold at MSP rates,” he added.

Further speaking on Bharat Bandh Rakesh Tikait said his protest was successful and has gathered support nationwide.

He also pointed out that the farmers union is ready to talk but no initiatives have been seen from the government.

“Our ‘Bharat Bandh’ was successful. We had the full support of farmers… We can’t seal down everything as we have to facilitate the movement of people. We are ready for talks with govt, but no talks are happening,” Rakesh Tikait said.

Since last year November, Hundreds of farmers led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha have been protesting at Delhi’s borders demanding a withdrawal of the three farm laws. Farmers fear these farm laws will do away with the minimum support price (MSP) system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations.

The government, however, has maintained that the laws are pro-farmer and has offered to amend them. Both sides have held as many as 11 rounds of talks but the impasse is yet to be broken.
