I am Hindu But Not Fool, We Don’t Make Religion An Event: Kamal Nath

This comes a day after the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) announced the schedule of three-tier panchayat elections

Mumbai: Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath said religion is not the basis of politics. . “We do not consider religion as the basis of our politics. We don’t make religion an event. Our religion is an event of our family, it is not an event of politics,” the former MP chief minister said.

The senior Congress leader further said that he is “proud” to be a Hindu, but not a fool. “I proudly say that I am a Hindu but I am not a fool,” news agency ANI quoted Nath as saying.

Speaking at an event that day, Nath accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Madhya Pradesh government of doing “serious injustice” to the other backward classes, as he claimed that the state has given only a 9-13 per cent quota to the OBCs in the panchayat elections.

This comes a day after the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) announced the schedule of three-tier panchayat elections.

BJP says that it will give 35 per cent reservation to OBCs. Still, in reality, it has given 11.2 per cent seats for Zilla Panchayat members, 9.5 per cent for Janpad Panchayat President posts, and 11.5 per cent seats for Janpad Panchayat members to the OBC community. And only 12.5 per cent seats for sarpanches (heads of village panchayats),” Nath said.

The former CM further claimed that OBCs have got zero posts for Zilla Panchayat members in 19 districts, zero posts for Janpad Panchayat presidents in 28 districts and zero posts for Janpad Panchayat members in 10 districts.

Notably, the state government has initiated a process for fresh reservation of seats as per the directions of the Supreme Court based on the report of the Madhya Pradesh State OBC Welfare Commission.

The official statistics on the fresh reservation of seats are not yet available in the compiled manner. However, Congress has been alleging that the fresh process has only reduced the number of reserved seats for the OBC community.
