INX Media Case: P Chidambaram’s Bail Plea Rejected, Delhi HC Calls Allegations Against Him “Serious”

Mumbai: In another drawback for former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, Delhi High Court dismissed the regular bail petition contending that the allegations against him are “serious in nature”.
Justice Suresh Kumar Kait said that he played an active and important role in the INX Media scam.

The court said, “There is no doubt that bail is his right, but if permission is allowed in such cases, it is against the public interest.”

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating the money laundering case, arrested Chidambaram last month. He is currently in judicial custody in Tihar Jail. The court recently extended his judicial custody till 27 November.

The Congress leader had sought regular bail saying that any part of the triple test, including the risk of flight, influencing witnesses and tampering with evidence, was made against him.

His bail plea was opposed by the ED. The agency said Chidambaram used the country’s high status “for his personal gain”.

The agency submitted, “The proceedings of the offence were done by P Chidambaram on the basis of his ability as finance minister. The bail should not be granted in view of the seriousness of the crimes against him.”

Chidambaram was granted bail by the Supreme Court on October 22 in the INX Media corruption case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
