Mumbai: The Kushinagar International Airport inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday has the longest runway in Uttar Pradesh with a length of 3.2 km and a width of 45 metres.

The airport will put this town in east UP on the global aviation map, and serve as a hub of connectivity for many other small towns in the region, reported Livehindustan.

LiveHindustan further said that the airport apron will be able to accommodate four larger aircraft.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was present at the inauguration ceremony, said that the Kushinagar airport will connect Buddhist pilgrimage sites. He announced a direct flight for Delhi-Kushinagar from November 26 and said that soon Mumbai and Kolkata would be connected.

Soon after the announcement, SpiceJet said in a release that flights on the Delhi-Kushinagar-Delhi sector will operate four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Scindia also said that 54 new airports have been built in the last seven years.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state government is working on 11 airports, including two international airports at Ayodhya and Gautam Buddh Nagar.

Ambassadors from India’s neighboring countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand, where the majority of the people follow Buddhism, lauded the opening of the airport in Kushinagar, saying the move will benefit their respective citizens who plan to come to the city where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained Mahaparinirvana.

Live Hindustan reported that the airport has the capacity to handle eight flights (four arrivals and four departures) every hour. The airport has a maximum passenger capacity of 300 passengers per hour.

Live Hindustan further informed that the government is working towards starting operations at night as well.

The Kushinagar airport has been constructed at a cost of ₹260 crores; its passenger terminal is spread across 3,600 square kilometres.

Soon after the announcement, SpiceJet said in a release that flights on the Delhi-Kushinagar-Delhi sector will operate four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
