Lalu Yadav fined ₹6,000 in 13-Yr-Old Poll Code Violation Case

Mumbai: RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was fined ₹6,000 in a 13-year-old case related to model code violation by a court in Jharkhand’s Palamu.

During the 2009 Assembly elections campaign, Yadav’s helicopter landed on a paddy field instead of the designated spot in Garhwa town where he was to address a rally.

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s lawyer Dhirendra Kumar Singh has informed that the former Chief Minister of Bihar has been acquitted of all charges and the matter has been disposed of.

“After hearing the petition of former Bihar CM and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 6000 on him. The case has been disposed and he is free of charges now. He does not need to come here again,” ANI quoted Lalu’s lawyer as saying.

The case pertains to the 2009 state assembly elections when Lalu Prasad Yadav was to address a public meeting in Garhwa town. The Garhwa ground was overcrowded and the pilot had trouble landing the helicopter at the designated spot, so he landed in a nearby paddy field.

The violation of the model code of conduct due to the unauthorized landing came to light.

Lalu was recently granted bail in the last of the five fodder scam cases in which he had served half his sentence.

The Jharkhand High Court had on February 21 this year convicted Prasad in the fodder scam case, which pertained to illegal withdrawal of Rs 139.35 crore from Doranda treasury in 1995-1996. A fine of Rs 60 lakh has also been imposed on Prasad.

The former Bihar chief minister has already been convicted in four previous fodder scam cases involving Dumka, Deoghar, Chaibasa and Banka-Bhagalpur treasuries.
