Leave Ukraine Temporarily: India Issues Fresh Advisory For Students Amid Rising Tensions

Mumbai: In view of the high level of tension in Ukraine, India on Tuesday advised students and its citizens to leave the country temporarily.

“The Indian Embassy is getting a large number of calls asking about the confirmation of online classes by medical universities. In this regard, as mentioned earlier, the Embassy engages with the relevant authorities to streamline the education process for Indian students. Students are advised, in the interest of their safety to leave Ukraine temporarily, rather than wait for an official confirmation from universities. Updates received in this regard would be conveyed subsequently”, the advisory read.

Notably, Indian students pursuing higher education in Ukraine are caught in a precarious and difficult situation in the Eastern European country amid escalating tensions with neighbouring Russia. While parents are concerned about the well being of their children, students are going through a hectic process in search of flight tickets to return to India.

Reports said that the students of Ternopil Medical University in Kyiv are in constant touch with the Indian Embassy. The university is also providing all possible help to the students. According to reports, there are 20,000 Indian nationals in Ukraine. Most of them are medical students.

Earlier in the day, the embassy had asked students to keep a watch on their social media for all updates. About 50 per cent of Indian students have already booked tickets for home, while the rest are trying to book one.

Meanwhile, the embassy has announced additional flights from Ukraine due to rising uncertainty and escalating tensions.

“Additional flights are being organised. Four flights from Kyiv to Delhi will operate on February 25, February 27 and March 6, 2022”, the ministry said.

Air India special flights will also be operated on February 22, 24 and 26. An air ticket from Kyiv to India costs around Rs 25-30,000. However, the ticket price is Rs 60,000 more, causing hardship to the students.
