SC-Appointed Committee Submits Interim Report On Pegasus Case

Mumbai: A Supreme Court-appointed committee probing the use of Pegasus for alleged spying has submitted its interim report. A bench headed by CJI NV Ramana will take up pending petitions for hearing on February 23.

A bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hema Kohli will hear the petitions in the matter on February 23. The panel had earlier said that only two persons have submitted their mobile phones for forensic examination.

On October 27 last year, the top court said it was compelled to determine the truth, as it had appointed an independent expert technical committee under the supervision of a retired apex court judge, Justice RV Raveendran, to probe the Pegasus espionage.

The apex court had authorized the technical committee to formulate its own procedure to effectively implement and respond to the terms of reference. The Committee may make such inquiry as it thinks fit and may take the statement of any person in connection with the inquiry and call for the record of any authority or person.

Justice Raveendran is overseeing the functioning of the Technical Committee and is assisted by former IPS officers Alok Joshi and Dr Sudip Oberoi, Chairperson of the Sub-Committee for International Organization for Standardization/International Electro-Technical Commission/Joint Technical Committee.

Several petitions were filed including these advocates ML Sharma, CPI(M) MP John Brittas, journalist N Ram, former IIM professors Jagdeep Chokkar, Narendra Mishra, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Rupesh Kumar Singh, SNM Abdi and the Editors Guild of India. Independent investigation into Pegasus snooping.
