Lockdown To Be Imposed In Kerala From 6 am On May 8 To May 16

Mumbai: The Kerala government has announced that the state will go into a lockdown from 6 am on May 8 to May 16. This comes after Kerala reported more than 40,000 daily coronavirus cases for the first time on Wednesday.

The state recorded its one-day high of 41,953 new infections on Wednesday. Ernakulam district recorded the highest number of 6,558 cases.

Vijayan warned yesterday that the state is facing a serious situation as the virus is spreading at an unprecedented rate.

“The state of Kerala is going through a dire situation with Kovid spreading rapidly. The test positivity rate is not decreasing. The situation calls for more restrictions in the state,” he said.

On Wednesday, 58 people died due to COVID, taking the state’s total death to 5,565.

At present, there are 3,75,658 patients undergoing treatment in various hospitals across Kerala, while 23,106 patients have recovered from the disease.

“All figures are increasing and the test positivity rate is also not decreasing. Under these circumstances, we need to strengthen the restrictions. As the number of COVID patients is increasing day by day, the need for oxygen has also increased. The oxygen stock is decreasing very rapidly. In this scenario, we need the Centre’s help in maintaining adequate stock of oxygen. I have requested the Prime Minister to provide 1,000 MT of imported liquefied medical oxygen to the state,” the Chief Minister said

In addition, he demanded that Kerala should be allocated 500 MT as the first instalment from the existing import quota, while another 500 MT could be allocated in the next phase.

“Consideration may also be given to allocating 500 MT from any steel plant near Kerala. In view of the increasing number of Covid patients, Kerala should be provided with as many oxygen tankers, PSA plants, oxygen concentrators and ventilators as possible on a high priority basis,” he added.
