Mumbai: The Madhya Pradesh government has issued a notification to provide 35%reservation to women at the stage of direct recruitment for government jobs. The reservation will be applicable in all departments except the ForestDepartment.

The Madhya Pradesh Civils Services (Special Provision for Appointment of Women) Rules, 1997 have been amended by the state government to grant women 35% of the available positions.

The notification’s copy states that, “Reservations for women shall be made for 35 percent of all posts in the state service (except Forest Department) at the stage of direct recruitment, and such reservations shall be horizontal and compartment-wise, notwithstanding anything contained in any service rules.”

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister, had previously promised that women will receive a 35 percent reservation in the police and other government positions, and a 50 percent reservation in teaching positions. In municipal bodies, including alderman and other jobs, women would be given preference. The government would cover the cost of females’ tuition while also guaranteeing that they receive better education.

Recently, the Women’s Reservation Bill that was approved by the Parliament was signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu.

The Rajya Sabha enacted the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhniyam’ overwhelmingly, making it the first law to be passed in the new Parliament building and guaranteeing women a 33 percent reservation in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

After a vote, the measure was approved on September 20 with 454 members voting in favour and two opposing the move to enact the bill.

Separate legislation sections were also put to a vote after the opposition members’ proposals were rejected.

On September 21, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was ‘unanimously’ passed in Rajya Sabha which marks the PM’s birthday according to the Hindu calendar.

Notably, Madhya Pradesh is scheduled to go for the assembly polls later this year. Through the polls, the state will elect legislators from 230 Assembly constituencies
