Mahila Congress Chief Sushmita Dev Quits Party, Sends Letter To Sonia Gandhi

Mumbai: Former Congress MP and President of Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev, resigned from the party on Monday. In her resignation letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Dev said she was “beginning a new chapter of public service”.

Dev hinted about her resignation after she changed her Twitter bio as “Former Member, Indian National Congress”

Ms Dev was among Congress leaders whose Twitter handle was shut down over a post showing pictures of the parents of a nine-year-old girl allegedly raped and murdered in Delhi.

The move came after Twitter blocked former Congress president Rahul Gandhi for posting a picture of the parents of a nine-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in Delhi.

She has previously been an MP from Silchar in Assam, her father’s stronghold.

On Sunday, Sushmita Dev wrote to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, not giving any reason for leaving her three-decade-long party, but talked about a “new chapter of public service”.

The daughter of Assam Congress stalwart and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev, she was the chief of the Congress’s women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress.
