Mumbai: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said making a law for population control won’t serve any purpose.

Reacting to the announcement that the Center may soon bring a Population Control Bill, Kumar said, “No purpose will be served by enacting a law for population control.”

“Population control can be achieved only by educating women and girls. Only through education and awareness can the fertility rate be checked,” he said.

Talking about the fertility rate in Bihar, which has come down from around 4 per cent earlier to 3 per cent, the Bihar CM said, “It all happened because of our constant effort to educate women and girls in the state. I hope It is expected that it will come down further to two per cent in the next four-five years.”

He cited the example of China where the one-child policy was in place for many years. “It has now turned into a one to a two-child policy,” Kumar said.

It should be noted that Bihar is the third most populous state in the country and the most densely populated state.
