Mobile Internet Ban Lifted In Two Meghalaya Districts

Mumbai: In a recent development, Meghalaya government on Tuesday lifted the ban on mobile internet services in two Jaintia Hills districts after improvement in the situation, PTI reported.

Mobile internet and messaging services were withdrawn in six districts of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region after clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups claimed three lives.

However, the services have been withdrawn in the three Khasi Hills districts and Ri-Bhoi district for 10 hours from 10 pm on Tuesday.

There were clashes between Khasi Students Union (KSU) members and non-tribals during a rally organized against the Citizenship Amendment Act and on Friday demanded the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) at Ichmati near the India-Bangladesh border.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Gabriel Ingarai told PTI, “The situation is returning to normal in the affected areas. We are closely monitoring and there has been no untoward incident in the last 24 hours.”

A senior home department official said mobile internet services were restored in West and East Jaintia Hills districts as no untoward incident was reported.

As the night curfew was promulgated throughout Shillong from 9 am on Tuesday night to 6 am on Wednesday morning, state Home Minister Lahmen Raimbui held a peace meeting with representatives of various religious bodies and social organizations.

The Home Minister appealed to the people to stop any act of violence or take the law into their own hands and urged them to work closely with the state government.

“In a democracy, we must work to fulfil the aspirations of the people through a due process,” he said.
