Mumbai Civic Body Proposes ₹3370.24 Crore For Education Sector

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday presented its budget for the year 2022-23 and proposed an education budget of ₹3370.24 crore for the financial year. The outlay is higher than last year’s education budget of ₹2945.78 crore.

A total of Rs 22,647 crore has been allocated for capital expenditure on projects related to infrastructure, drainage systems and water supply.

While capital expenditure is 49 per cent of the total budget, revenue expenditure is about 51 per cent of the total allocation.

Rs 3,200 crore has been allocated for the Mumbai Coastal Road Project and Rs 1,300 crore for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road project.

Keeping in view the needs of public transport, Rs 800 crore has been allocated to assist BEST.

The civic body has allowed private and government companies to set up Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (PEVCS) in the public parking spaces of BMC.

“Letters of intent have been issued for setting up PEVCS at 12 such locations,” the BMC said.

The BMC commissioner also announced that the civic body will set up a Shiva Yoga Center to spread awareness among people about physical and mental health among the aged, co-morbid and youth population. Such centres will be set up in public, school and marriage halls.

Apart from this, Rs 1 crore has also been allocated for creating a climate action cell to deal with the challenge of a hotter planet.

The BMC proposed an education outlay of Rs 3,370.24 crore for the financial year. The outlay is higher than last year’s education budget of Rs 2,945.78 crore.

The BMC said that in the academic year 2021-22, a jump of 26,449 students was registered in all the municipal schools.

The BMC said that the online admission process for the 2022-23 academic year is already underway. It started on January 4 and the window will close tomorrow i.e. February 4. Seats for all nursery classes and vacant seats for classes KG to 8 will also be filled.

The allotment of seats will be done through an online lottery system.

Provision has been made in the budget to upgrade the virtual training centre. Rs 26.25 crore has been allocated for primary classes and Rs 11.77 crore for secondary classes for this purpose.

BMC has planned to start an e-library as a pilot project in 50 more primary schools and for this, a provision of Rs 10 lakh has been made in the budget.

The civic body plans to digitize 1,300 more classrooms this year at a total cost of over Rs 27 crore.

In addition, Rs 419 crore has been allocated for repair, upgradation and reconstruction of BMC school blocks.

Schools will also hand over free educational material including uniforms, notebooks, school bags, water bottles and tiffin boxes etc. during the academic year.
