Mumbai Matchmaker Told To Refund Money For Failing To Provide Promised Suitors

The court found the matchmaker guilty of deficiency in the services promised to the complainant

Mumbai: A consumer court has ordered a matchmaker from Mumbai to refund ₹55,000 to a woman for failing to provide 15 suitors per month, as promised. The matchmaker will also have to pay ₹5,000 as compensation.

The woman had filed the complaint eight years ago. The matchmaker, identified as Priya Shah, promised the woman an average of 15 matches per month.

As per the deal, Shah was to hold talks with the boy’s parents and mail prospective profiles, photographs to finalize the marriage.

The woman paid Rs 55,000 by check-in 2012, but the promised suitors were not provided. And when the woman and her father sent an e-mail complaint, there was no response from the matchmaker.

Two months later, the woman terminated the matchmaker’s services and demanded a refund. When the money was not returned, the victim approached the consumer court. Initially, the matchmaker was represented by a lawyer, who later failed to appear for the hearing.

The court found the matchmaker guilty of deficiency in the services promised to the complainant.

The court also took cognizance of Priya Shah’s visiting card and said that she was actually providing matrimonial services to the customers.

“From e-mails on record, it can be seen that the complainant and her father have been in touch with the opposite party with respect to their requirements constantly but she has chosen not to reply to the said e-mails,” a report in Times of India quoted from the court’s order.
