N Biren Singh Takes Oath As Manipur CM; 5 MLAs Sworn In As Cabinet Ministers

Mumbai: N Biren Singh on Monday took oath as the Chief Minister of Manipur, for the second term. Singh was administered the oath of office by Manipur Governor La Ganesan at Raj Bhavan in Imphal.

Five MLAs, including Nemcha Kipgen, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Thongam Biswajit Singh, Awangbou Newmai and Govindas Konthoujam, were also sworn in as Cabinet ministers of the state.

Singh was unanimously elected the leader of the BJP Legislature Party in a meeting held on Sunday, which was attended by the party’s central observers, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju.

Ahead of the BJP’s state legislature party meeting, Singh visited Delhi and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

The BJP retained power in the state by securing an absolute majority with 32 seats in the 60-member House in the recently concluded assembly elections.

Congress won five seats and the NPP seven. Naga People’s Front got five seats and Kuki People’s Alliance got two seats. Independent got three seats.

The BJP leaders were discussing government formation in Manipur after securing an absolute majority for the first time in the state.

The BJP had formed the previous government in the state with the support of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) and the National People’s Party (NPP) with Biren Singh as Chief Minister.
