No Garden Officially Named After Tipu Sultan By BMC: Mumbai Mayor

Mumbai: Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Monday issued a clarification amid a growing controversy over the city’s garden in the name of ‘Tipu Sultan’.

The debate had recently started with BJP leaders claiming that Congress leader and Maharashtra cabinet minister Aslam Shaikh was planning to name a playground in the Malad region after the 18th-century ruler.

“There is no garden officially named after Tipu Sultan by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Malad, Mumbai. The name of the garden is not registered with BMC. The signboard (of the garden’s name) has been installed by the local MLA, with whom, we are speaking,” Pednekar said on Monday.

Ahead of the BMC elections, the playing field has become a flashpoint for the MVA alliance and the opposition BJP. Sheikh had inaugurated the ‘Tipu Sultan Sports Complex’ on Republic Day and said that the name was being used at the local level for a long time.

“BJP is just politicising this issue. When they were in politics many such Gardens, roads were given the name of Tipu Sultan. Why do they have problems now?” he asked, terming the ‘Tiger of Mysore’ a “brave” person.

The BJP had decided to stage a sit-in against naming the garden after the 18th-century ruler. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Tourism and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray had said that the name of the place is yet to be decided.
