PM Modi To Inaugurate MTHL On Jan 12, Says CM Shinde

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday (Dec 31) announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the longest sea bridge in the country, on January 12.

The bridge is spanning 21.8 kilometers between Sewri in Mumbai and the Nhava Sheva area in Raigad district

The Chief Minister said that the 21.8-kilometer bridge will cut the average travel time from two hours to about 15-20 minutes between Sewri in Mumbai and the Nhava Sheva area in the Raigad district.

Addressing reporters, Shinde said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate MTHL on January 12. This bridge will bring economic development and growth in areas connected to it.”

Officials point out that in addition to connecting the two biggest cities in the state, the MTHL will also build a link to the crucial Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

More about MTHL

With a length of about 22 kilometers and a sea area of 16.5 kilometers, the MTHL is expected to become the longest sea bridge in the country and the longest in the world. It will start in south Mumbai at Sewri, go across Thane Creek, and end at Chirle, which is on the outskirts of Navi Mumbai.

The bridge will significantly reduce the time it takes to get from the mainland to the island city—just 20 to 25 minutes. It is anticipated that the MTHL will improve East-West connectivity, making it easier to move labor and raw supplies quickly from Navi Mumbai to Mumbai City, which will save money overall.

An orthotropic steel deck was used in the construction of the MTHL, allowing for a span between two piers that is up to three times greater than the usual length. In sections that function as huge ship navigation channels, this building method is used.
