Proceed On Foot If You Can’t Find Vehicles: India While Asking Citizens To Leave Kharkiv

Mumbai: A second advisory issued by Indian Embassy in Ukraine for Indian nationals in Kharkiv further highlighted the urgency to leave Kharkiv “immediately” in light of the “deteriorating situation”.

In an advisory issued on the day, the Indian embassy asked the citizens to reach Pesochin, Babaye and Bezlyudovka by 6 pm on the day.

“Urgent advisory to all Indian nationals in Kharkiv. For their safety and security, they must leave Kharkiv immediately. Proceed to Pesochin, Babaye and Bezlyudovka as soon as possible. Under all circumstances they must reach these settlements *by 1800 hrs (Ukrainian time) today*,” the embassy said on Twitter.

The advisory comes a day after an Indian student was killed in an encounter in the war-torn Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Naveen Shekharappa Gyangoudar, a fourth-year medical student at Kharkiv National Medical University, died in heavy firing on Tuesday.

With a population of approximately 1.4 million, Kharkiv is a largely Russian-speaking city near the Russian border. The city has been a target for the Russian military since President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine last Thursday and it intensified on Tuesday.

The Indian government has launched ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring back stranded students and citizens from the conflict-torn Ukraine. To scale up the evacuation effort, three Indian Air Force (IAF) airraft have been pressed in service since Wednesday morning, reported news agency ANI.

Of these, two IAF aircraft have taken off from Hindon airbase for Hungary and Romania and one C-17 Globemaster took off at 4 am earlier today for Romania, it said.
