Punjab Government Releases Rs 4.50 Crore For Flood-Hit Areas In State

Mumbai: In a view of heavy floods hit the state, Punjab government has released Rs 4.50 crore for relief operations in six flood-hit districts of the state, Revenue Minister G S Kangar said on Wednesday.

He said that one crore rupees had been released for the worst affected Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Rupnagar districts and Rs 50 lakh for Ludhiana, Moga and Ferozepur districts.

Kangar said that the state government has already released Rs 2.10 crore for these districts.

The amount for ration, medicines, drinking water, milk powder, fodder for animals and other items including tents, tarpaulins, flood-affected people.

On Monday, the minister said in a meeting of the Disaster Management Group chaired by the Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts had demanded more funds for relief work.

In many districts of Punjab, people have lost their homes, belongings and standing crops in the recent floods. The state government has estimated the damage at Rs 1,700 crore.

State Water Resources Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria said that 12 blocks in the Sutlej river embankments were successfully plugged into Ludhiana, Moga and Jalandhar.

He said nine shots were fired in Mowal and Mau Sahib villages of Phillaur Sub Division, two in Bholewal village of Ludhiana and Kishanpura village in Moga district.

The Sutlej river and its tributaries had flooded several areas of the state after heavy rains and excess water released from the Bhakra Dam, causing widespread damage to crops and homes in the low-lying areas.
