Put Pic On Death Certificates Too: Mamata On PM’s Pic On Vaccine Certificates

Mumbai: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday in an apparent reference to PM Narendra Modi that he should “allow his photo on death certificates” as he has made it “mandatory that his photo should be there on COVID-19 vaccine certificates”

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Banerjee also said that the state government would be extending COVID-19 restrictions in the state till August 30.

“A person may not be your supporter. But you made it mandatory that your photo should be there on Covid-19 vaccine certificates. I may not like you. But even then, I would have to carry this. Where is freedom? Now, you should allow your photo on death certificates too,” Banerjee said.

The opposition has pulled up / mocked the BJP over the picture of PM Narendra Modi on the vaccination certificate. In fact, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien had approached the Election Commission alleging that the BJP was diluting the role of health workers by “missing official machinery”.

He had urged the Election Commission to issue directions to remove the PM’s picture from the vaccination certificates. Following this, the Election Commission had asked the Center to remove the PM’s photograph from the certificates in the poll-bound states.

The ruling party, however, justified the move and said that the initiative was taken to create awareness about the appropriate treatment of COVID-19 even after vaccination.

“The photograph along with the message of the prime minister in the vaccination certificates reinforces the message for creating awareness about the importance of following COVID-19 appropriate behaviour even after vaccination, in the larger public interest,” Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health had told the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament. She was replying to a question by Rajya Sabha MP Kumar Ketkar.
