Ramdev Moves Supreme Court Over Cases Filed Against Him For Remarks On Allopathy

Earlier this month, Ramdev said he would soon get the jab and described doctors as "God's envoys on earth"

Mumbai: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court challenging multiple FIRs against him for his comments on the efficacy of allopathy in the treatment of COVID-19.

He has also asked that the First Information Reports filed across the country be clubbed together and transferred to Delhi.

Last month, as the second wave of Covid, ripped through the country killing thousands, Ramdev stirred a controversy with his remarks on the efficacy of allopathic drugs against the virus.

In a widely shared video, he was heard saying, “Millions of people have died due to allopathic medicines, far more than those who did not get treatment or oxygen.”

He also reportedly called allopathy a “stupid and bankrupt” science, which hurt the entire medical fraternity.

Later, challenging his arrest said, “Even his baap (father) cannot arrest Swami Ramdev”. His company Patanjali said it would give a “befitting reply” to any notice of defamation.

Various units of the Indian Medical Association lodged police complaints against him, on the basis of which several cases were registered. The association, which had tendered an apology within 15 days, later filed a defamation suit against him and sought compensation of ₹1,000 crores.

Ramdev withdrew his remarks within days, following a letter from Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan. But the Indian Medical Association has said that they will drop the case against him only if it completely withdraws its remarks against allopathy.

“We have nothing against yoga guru Baba Ramdev. His statements are against vaccines for COVID-19. We think his statements could confuse people, may divert them. This is our big concern as he has many followers,” said IMA chief Dr JA Jayalal.

Earlier this month, Ramdev said he would soon get the jab and described doctors as “God’s envoys on earth”.
