Such Rhetoric Will Tarnish Country’s Image: Cong’s Adhir On Prophet Remarks

Mumbai: Following former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s controversial remarks against Prophet Muhammad, Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury said if such “rhetoric” is allowed in India, it will only “tarnish” the country’s image.

Reacting to the suspension of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal by BJP for their controversial remarks, AR Choudhary said, “Strict action should be taken against those who are responsible for tarnishing the image of the country. Do not try to save them by making excuses.”

“If such rhetoric is allowed in India, our image will be tarnished,” he added.

Amid protests from Muslim groups and sharp reactions from countries such as Kuwait, Qatar and Iran, before suspending its leaders, the party on Sunday had issued a statement asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces insults of any religious personality.

Sharma’s comments in a TV debate about 10 days ago and Jindal’s now-deleted tweets started a Twitter trend calling for a boycott of Indian products in some countries.

Party general secretary Arun Singh in a statement had said that the party is strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion.

The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy, he said. The BJP statement, however, made no direct mention of any incident or comment.
