Terrorism, Lack Of Development Reasons Behind Making Ladakh A UT: Rajnath Singh

The minister also informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon hold a meeting with the political leader of Ladakh to conduct elections in the Union Territory

Mumbai: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that terrorism and lack of socio-economic development were some of the main reasons behind making Ladakh a Union Territory (UT).

Singh, who is currently in Leh for a three-day visit to Ladakh, said this while inaugurating 63 infrastructure projects being built by the Border Roads Organization (BRO).

Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister acknowledged the role of BRO in ensuring connectivity in many areas of the country.

He said, “Connectivity is of great importance in the development of the country. BRO has played a vital role in connecting many areas of the country.”

“Lack of socio-economic development of terrorism were some of the main reasons behind making Ladakh a union territory. The incidents of terrorism have come down after the region was made a union territory. Many steps being taken by the Centre to bring investment and improve infrastructure here,” he added.

The minister also informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon hold a meeting with the political leader of Ladakh to conduct elections in the Union Territory.

He said, “PM Modi wants the political process to start in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The Prime Minister has already spoken to the political parties of Jammu and Kashmir. He will also talk to the people of Ladakh soon.”

On Sunday, Singh met elected representatives of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDC), Kargil and was also briefed about the security situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Eastern Ladakh by the senior officials of Army’s Northern Command.
