Thane Man Loses Rs 9.5 Lakh In Online Banking Fraud

Mumbai: An unidentified fraudster allegedly withdrew Rs 9.53 lakh from the bank account of a 53-year-old man in Maharashtra after he downloaded an app on his mobile phone and asked him to share confidential information. The police gave this information on Monday.

Residents of the Badlapur area, who were working in a private company after retiring from the Navy, informed the police that since their mobile app of a nationalized bank was not working, they contacted its customer care desk and informed about it.

Following this, he received a call from a person posing as an executive of the customer service call, asking him to download the ‘AnyDesk’ app, said an official of the Badlapur (West) police station.

Following this, he received a call from a person posing as an executive of the customer service call, asking him to download the ‘AnyDesk’ app, said an official of Badlapur (West) police station.

The caller gave some instructions to the person and also asked for some information about his bank account. Later he told the person that his user ID and password had been changed and he could use the app.

However, on January 24, the person received a message from the bank that his mobile number registered for the account had been changed.

The man was shocked and when he went to the bank to inquire about it, he was told that Rs 9,53,363 had been transferred from his account to another, the official said.

The victim later filed a police complaint.

The police on Sunday registered a case against the unidentified culprit under Indian Penal Code Section 420 (cheating) and provisions of the Information Technology Act, the official added.
