TN To Call Special Session To Pass Another Bill Against NEET Exam

Mumbai: Tamil Nadu government will convene a special Assembly session to pass another bill to exempt the state from the NEET exam and send it to state Governor RN Ravi again, state CM MK Stalin said on Saturday.

He alleged that the governor did not fulfil his duty by deferring the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) Bill passed by the state assembly.

Addressing an all-party meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai, Stalin said, “The governor sat on the bill for 142 days before returning it to the government. I personally met the governor on the issue of NEET exam.”

“The bill was passed in the assembly keeping in mind the demand of 8 crore people demanding exemption from NEET exam. It was passed unanimously in the state assembly. I ask you all – representatives of political parties- to give your valuable feedback in today’s all-party meeting. The Governor did not bother to send it to the President for his consent,” the Chief Minister said.

Stalin said he had appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing when he inaugurated 11 new medical colleges.

Stalin said at the party meeting, “I had appealed to the PM in the virtual meeting when he inaugurated 11 new medical colleges. Now the governor has sent our bill back after keeping it on his desk for 143 days.”

Speaking after the all-party meeting, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said, “The resolution to send a new bill again to the Governor of Tamil Nadu has been unanimously passed. A new bill will be passed again in the special assembly session to give exemption to the NEET exam for Tamil Nadu.”

“We are hopeful that the AIADMK will also participate in the special session of the assembly as it is about the people,” he said.

BJP boycotted the all-party meeting today. BJP ally AIADMK also did not participate in the all-party meeting. However, the AIADMK has issued a statement saying that AIADMK is against the NEET exam and will support the Tamil Nadu government on the relaxation of NEET in the state.

According to the NEET Bill, students would get an exemption from the NEET exam for the next 10 years. Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi returned the NEET exemption Bill to the assembly Speaker, stating that is beyond the interest of students.
